Observing Gravitational Radiation with QSO Proper Motions and the SKA

چکیده

The history of astronomy has been that of our measurement of photons from astrophysical objects and, more recently, the early universe (the CMB). Analogously, the universe is thought to be suffused by gravitational radiation — a background from sources in the early universe (e.g., inflation) and “foregrounds” from the gravitational interaction of massive astrophysical objects, such as the massive black holes in the centers of galaxies. This gravitational radiation perturbs spacetime, altering path-lengths and lensing light rays, throughout the universe. The small amplitude of the perturbations (strains of h ∼ 10) makes these effects very difficult to observe. In this section, we examine the time-dependent “gravitational lensing” which results in apparent proper motions of distant galaxies, potentially observable by the SKA.

The Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment Catalog of stellar proper motions in the OGLE-II Galactic bulge fields

We present proper motion (μ) catalog of 5,078,188 stars in 49 Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment II (OGLE-II) Galactic bulge fields, with the total area close to 11 square degrees. The proper motion measurements are based on 138 − 555 I-band images taken during four observing seasons: 1997-2000. The catalogue stars are in the magnitude range 11 < I < 18 mag. In particular, the catalogue i...

The Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment. a Hunt for Caustic Crossings in Qso 2237+0305. *

In 1998 The Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE) successfully implemented automated data reductions for QSO 2237+0305. Using a new image subtraction method we achieved a differential photometry scatter of 1–5% for images A–D respectively. Combined with a time sampling of 1–2 times a week this is sufficient for early detection of caustic crossings. Nearly real time photometry of QSO 2...

The Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment Monitoring of Qso 2237+0305 *

We present results from 2 years of monitoring of Huchra's lens (QSO 2237+0305) with the 1.3 m Warsaw telescope on Las Campanas, Chile. Photometry in the V band was done using a newly developed method for image subtraction. Reliable subtraction without Fourier division removes all complexities associated with the presence of a bright lensing galaxy. With positions of lensed images adopted from H...

Maser Astrometry with VLBI and the SKA

We discuss the unique opportunities for maser astrometry with the inclusion of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) in Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) networks. The first phase of the SKA will enable observations of hydroxyl and methanol masers, positioning the latter to an accuracy of 5 microarcseconds, and the second phase may allow water maser observations. These observations will provi...

Weak Gravitational Lensing with Ska

I shall outline the basic principles and some observational aspects of weak gravitational lensing, and discuss several applications of this powerful tool in observational cosmology. It will be explained why the applications have been restricted to optical observations up to now, and why SKA is going to change this. I conclude with a few general remarks on a comparison between SKA and the NGST, ...
